Frontier Communications Takes Drastic Action After Suffering Cyberattack

    Telecom Provider

American telecom provider, Frontier Communications, is currently recovering from a cyberattack that targeted some of its IT systems. This leading communications provider in the United States offers gigabit Internet speeds to millions of consumers and businesses in 25 states through its fiber-optic network.

Upon discovery of the attack, Frontier took immediate action to prevent the threat actors from further infiltrating the network. This resulted in some operational disruptions as the company had to partially shut down certain systems. Despite this, the cybercriminals were still able to access certain personally identifiable information (PII), although Frontier has not disclosed if it belonged to customers, employees, or both.

In a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission on Thursday, the company stated, “On April 14, 2024, Frontier Communications Parent, Inc. [..] detected that a third party had gained unauthorized access to portions of its information technology environment.” According to their investigation, it is believed that the third party was a cybercrime group that was able to access PII data.

However, BleepingComputer discovered that the company’s website and mobile app are still experiencing technical issues.

According to an internal memo, the network outage caused disruptions to various applications and platforms, including Virtual Front Office modules, E-Bonded Applications, Customer Wholesale Portal, and more. Despite Frontier’s assurances that residential and business networks are not affected, customers have been reporting internet connection issues and difficulty reaching human operators through support phone numbers.

In their filing, Frontier stated, “The Company does not believe the incident is reasonably likely to materially impact the Company’s financial condition or results of operations.” When contacted for comment, a Frontier spokesperson was not immediately available for comment.
